FAQ
on Vehicle Importation
Can
I register my vehicle in Hong Kong?
If
your private car is left-hand-drive (i.e. drives on right), you can't
register it in Hong Kong
in virtually all circumstances. Thus, generally, private cars are
mostly imported from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and
Singapore. Motorbikes are of course not affected by this rule. You are
encouraged to obtain approval or exemption from the Environmental
Protection Department before shipping your vehicle into Hong Kong. For
the quotation for the approximate taxable value of your vehicle,
contact us at
vehicle@vaisseauhk.com,
with the details of your vehicle. Our professional team will get back
to you in due diligence.
Do I need to pay any tax?
Generally,
regardless your vehicle is brand new or not, it is required
to pay a tax called "First Registration Tax" in order to get your
vehicle ride on-the-road. If you do not intend to use your vehicle on
road (say you just want to take care of it by yourself, or you plan to
take it elsewhere), you can declare your car as general household
effects - no tax is needed. However, it is important that if you change
your mind and register your vehicle in Hong Kong later, you might get
prosecuted which can lead to imprisonment.
How does the Government calculate the "First
Registration Tax"?
There
are two main steps: First, getting the determined taxable value of the
vehicle. Such determination is done by the Customs and Excise
Department. On the second step, after getting the taxable value, the
tax can be precisely calculated by looking at the tax table of First
Registration Tax. For motorbikes, you will expect the tax will be at
35% of the taxable value. Consulate Generals can exempt from the tax,
but they still need to process with normal application.
